From the Chair
It’s a wild time, and there’s a lot going on. There’s certainly fun to be had, but there’s also craziness out there. The two extremes are reasonably summarized thusly:
As fun (or nervewracking, or both) as all this Trump-show craziness is, I must at this stage offer my usual warning. Do not let the faraway palace intrigues of the federal government distract you from more important local matters. There are things happening in your town right now that need your attention, your activism, and your voice. Do not let yourself grow distracted by shiny things far away that keep you from noticing local shenanigans.
It is imperative that you don’t get distracted by things you cannot influence. Lots of things about “our system” are going to erode or collapse, maybe even sooner than any of us think. Building the next thing, whatever it is, will start at the community level. It will start in your town. Be about laying the foundations of that, starting right now.
There’s a lot going on. Find out what, and find out how to help. You can do it!

In the News: Women’s History Month
Because there’s a month for ALMOST everything, here we are. The 9 March Riverside Press-Enterprise included a great editorial relating to this that is worth cribbing heavily from here. In it the opinion editors of the SCNG salute three libertarian women: Ayn Rand, Isabel Paterson, and Rose Wilder Lane.
From Ayn Rand, on freedom of thought:
Freedom is the fundamental requirement of man’s mind. A rational mind does not work under compulsion; it does not subordinate its grasp of reality to anyone’s orders, directives, or control … it may be silenced, proscribed, imprisoned, or destroyed; it cannot be forced; a gun is not an argument.
From Isabel Paterson, on the idea that “everyone should live primarily for others”:
Is each person to do exactly what any other person wants him to do, without limits or reservations? And only what others want him to do? What if various persons make conflicting demands? The scheme is impracticable … Of course what the humanitarian actually proposes is that he shall do what he thinks is good for everybody. It is at this point that the humanitarian sets up the guillotine.
From Rose Wilder Lane, on American government limits:
Will an American defend the Constitutional law that divides, restricts, limits and weakens political-police power, and thus protects every citizen’s personal freedom, his human rights, his exercise of those rights in a free, productive, capitalist economy and a free society? Or will he permit the political structure of these United States to be replaced by a socialist state, with its centralized, unrestricted police power regimenting individuals into classes, suppressing individual liberty, sacrificing human rights to an imagined “common good,” and substituting for civil laws the edicts, or “directives,” once accurately called tyranny and now called administrative law?
Ladies, we salute you, too. Happy Women’s History Month, everybody.
More Suggested “Reading” This Month
(It’s not always reading; it’s the internet, you know how it is)
Chris Bray has been writing an intriguing series on Point Reyes here in California and how it seems to be kicking ranchers out. Check out the latest here:
March is a dedicated month. It’s also got a few holidays in it. It’s ALSO the anniversary of that time when the governments of the world went completely insane and began the spiral into lockdown hysteria. It’s been five years now. Never forget the damage they did to you:

Voter Registration and Party Membership
If you vote, be sure your registration is Libertarian. Whether you vote or not, stay abreast of your registration details on the California Secretary of State page at this link: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/cavoter
Being a registered Libertarian voter certainly allows you to call yourself a real libertarian. However, there is more you can do. You can join the national Libertarian Party as a “sustaining member" by signing the membership application statement and paying dues to the national organization. Note that while paying dues at the state level (California) makes you a local "central committee member," national membership is separate.
If you aren't a dues-paying member at all, you can join as a national member AND as a state/county member using a single online form:
Combined National/State/County Membership Form
